You know you are a 80’s kid when…
Coming out of this pandemic I often wondered how we would’ve dealt with it back in the 80s. I believe many of our parents would’ve kicked us out the door and locked it so we could get fresh air. “Come back when the street lights are on!” Not that our parents were mean but they did the best they knew how to do as we do now.
You know you are a 80s (even late 70s) kid if you were told to go drink from the hose if you came in for water.
When you came in for a snack and they told you to get out and threw you all a box of popsicles to share. No matching napkins, no sitting at a fancy craft table. Maybe they threw you some chalk.
If you had to be inside, your basement was unfinished but was cool with some lawn chairs and an old carpet remnant. If you had a birthday party there now, I wonder if people would be offended.
After dinner the whole neighborhood showed up to play kick the can or spin the bottle.
Best 80s childhood memories-
• You owned a Rubik’s cube and never solved it.
• You passed handwritten notes.
• You timed it to record the top 40 on the weekend so you had the playlist. It was on a cassette and if someone walked in to talk to you the tape was ruined. Then you used your Walkman to listen.
• Did you meet up on bikes in the neighborhood to play a game of PIG on the court or Chinese jumprope?
• You had to talk to a girlfriend or boyfriend in the room with parents because of the cord.
• You had a birthday party at McDonald’s.
• If you carried a Trapper Keeper but only kept it organized for the first 2 weeks. Plus you had puffy stickers or scratch n sniff ones on it.
• You were excited the first pair of Jordache jeans you bought.
• If you ever went to an arcade to play the latest video game Pac Mac or Donkey Kong. Plus the most advanced game Dragon’s Lair was considered so complex.
• Your first dance was around the roller rink holding hands with a boy to Air Supply.
• You remember going to the opening of Star Wars and storm troopers scared you.
• If you wore Jelly shoes in the summer.
• Speak n spell or math was your advanced school tool.
• If someone’s parent called your parent it made you nervous.
• Saturday cartoons or Sir Graves Ghastly.
• Watching Live Aid.
• Remembering the Challenger explosion
• If you still remember who shot J.R.
• Members Only jacket
• Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles were your life.
• Converse high tops with your jeans pegged and socks over them.
• You played pong on a black and white tv
• Your parents had mauve or teal in the house and wooden utensils on the wall. (They may have been pulled down to smack you)
• You know what big hair meant
• Bands like Whitesnake, Poison and Van Halen
• Corduroy, puffy sleeves and velour shirts

Our phone cord was long enough to stretch to the next room. My parents were cool, we had a “touch tone” phone. Getting in trouble when the phone bill came – “who has been making these toll calls?!”
